PM SVANidhi Startup Challenge 2026

The PM SVANidhi Startup Challenge 2026 is a national innovation challenge designed for DPIIT-recognized startups in India that have developed products, prototypes, pilots, or market-ready solutions capable of addressing the challenges faced by street vendors. The program specifically targets startups that can create practical, scalable, and technology-driven solutions to improve the economic resilience, operational efficiency, and overall quality of life of millions of street vendors across the country.

Launched under the PM SVANidhi initiative by Startup India and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the challenge seeks to bridge the gap between grassroots problems and startup-led innovation. Street vendors play a critical role in India’s urban economy, yet many continue to face challenges related to financial inclusion, access to formal systems, sustainable business practices, infrastructure limitations, and climate-related vulnerabilities. The challenge has been structured to encourage startups to develop solutions that can directly address these issues while creating measurable impact at scale.

The program focuses on several key problem areas identified within the street vendor ecosystem. These include improving financial literacy and access to financial services, promoting environmentally sustainable practices such as eco-friendly packaging, strengthening vendor identification and outreach mechanisms, and developing climate-resilient and ergonomic vending infrastructure. By concentrating on these themes, the challenge aims to support innovations that not only solve operational problems but also contribute to long-term economic sustainability for street vendors.

Unlike many startup competitions that end with prize distribution, the PM SVANidhi Startup Challenge places significant emphasis on real-world implementation. Selected startups receive the opportunity to work directly with MoHUA and various Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to pilot their solutions in live environments. This pilot implementation component enables startups to test their products with actual beneficiaries, gather feedback, validate assumptions, and demonstrate impact in operational conditions. Such validation can be particularly valuable for startups looking to refine their offerings and establish evidence of effectiveness before pursuing larger-scale adoption.

In addition to pilot opportunities, the challenge provides equity-free and non-repayable grant funding of up to ₹20 lakh. The grant is disbursed through milestone-linked tranches, allowing startups to receive financial support as they achieve predefined implementation objectives. This structure encourages execution while helping startups fund product development, deployment, testing, and scaling activities without giving up ownership or equity.

The selection process is designed to identify solutions with the strongest potential for impact and scale. Applications are reviewed by a multi-stakeholder selection committee comprising experts from Startup India, MoHUA, and other relevant organizations. Evaluation focuses on factors such as innovation, feasibility, scalability, potential impact on street vendors, alignment with challenge themes, and the capabilities of the founding team. Shortlisted startups may also be invited for presentations or interview rounds before final selections are made. Up to 30 startups are expected to be selected through the challenge.

A distinguishing feature of the PM SVANidhi Startup Challenge is its focus on enabling broader adoption of successful innovations. Beyond funding and pilot implementation, selected startups may receive support for national scale-up through the PM SVANidhi ecosystem. The program envisions creating pathways through which effective solutions can be integrated into wider government initiatives and deployed across multiple locations, increasing their reach and long-term impact.

The challenge is open to startups at the Validation Stage, Early Traction Stage, and Scaling Stage, making it suitable for ventures that have already moved beyond the idea stage and can demonstrate tangible progress. Startups with existing products, prototypes, pilots, or market traction are specifically encouraged to participate, indicating that the program prioritizes solutions that are closer to implementation and deployment.
