BIOPACKATHON 2026 – Biodegradable Packaging Challenge
Offered By - Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Government Of India
About the Program
BIOPACKATHON 2026 is a national-level innovation challenge launched by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. The program focuses on addressing a critical environmental challenge: the widespread use of non-biodegradable sachet packaging for pan masala and gutkha.
These small-format sachets, produced in extremely high volumes across India, are designed for durability, moisture resistance, and shelf-life stability. However, their multi-layered structure makes them difficult to recycle, leading to large-scale environmental pollution. Despite regulatory restrictions on plastic-based packaging, current alternatives remain largely non-biodegradable and continue to accumulate as litter in urban and rural ecosystems.
BIOPACKATHON 2026 aims to encourage innovators to develop plastic-free, biodegradable, and scalable packaging solutions that comply with regulatory norms while maintaining functional performance. The challenge specifically targets solutions that can replace existing sachet formats without compromising on strength, barrier properties, or manufacturability.
Participants are expected to propose solutions that are not only environmentally sustainable but also viable for mass production and industry adoption. The program sits at the intersection of sustainability, materials science, packaging innovation, and regulatory compliance, making it highly relevant for startups and innovators working in climate tech and circular economy solutions.
According to the official problem statement, the need arises from both environmental concerns and regulatory mandates, including restrictions under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, which prohibit the use of plastic in such packaging formats.
